If you’ve been following this page, you know I’m all about building a solid "toolbox" for neuropathy— here’s one tool that often gets overlooked because it doesn’t often get mentioned in the neurologist office - Counseling!
24/7, the grind - handling the pain and anxiety: internal resources are at max capacity. Think of a counselor as someone who helps strategize for the mental aspect. Here’s how it fits in:
Breaking the "Pain-Stress Loop": When the burning dials up to an eleven, your stress levels also spike, which usually makes the pain feel even worse. A counselor helps you find the "off switch" for that stress response so the pain doesn't snowball.
Managing the "Spiraling thoughts: It’s easy to spin out during a rough flare-up and start thinking this is just your life of misery! Counseling helps you catch those thoughts before they tank your mood, helping you separate who you are from what your nerves are doing.
The "Pacing" Strategy: We’ve all had those days where we feel "okay" and try to do everything at once, only to pay for it for the next three days. A counselor acts as a coach to help you build a better game plan for your daily energy so you stop hitting that wall.
Quieting the Nighttime Static: Pain loves to get louder right when you’re trying to sleep. Instead of just lying there frustrated, you can learn mental routines to quiet your brain down so you can actually get some rest, which makes the next day way more manageable.
The Bottom Line: The doctors are there to look at the "wiring," but a counselor is there to help the "operator" handle the equipment when it’s malfunctioning. It’s just another tool for anyone trying to navigate life with neuropathy without letting the pain take over your head!
